Why I Build My Outfits From the Shoes Up

How starting with footwear helps me feel put-together, practical, and ready for real life

When people talk about getting dressed, they often start with the top- a favourite blouse or knit they feel good in- or maybe their go-to jeans.

But for me? I almost always start with my shoes.

Shoes First, Always

Each morning, I think about what I’m going to need from my outfit that day. For me, that usually includes the school run- twice a day- which adds up to a good three miles of walking. Add in client meetings, errands, or time at my desk, and I need footwear that works hard and makes me feel pulled-together.

Once I know what shoes I’ll be wearing, I plan the rest of the outfit around them. I don’t like having to change partway through the day, so I aim to get dressed once- in something that’s comfortable, stylish, and meets all the day’s demands.

Why It Matters: My Feet Come First

This approach became essential for me once I realised just how specific my needs were when it comes to shoes.

I have wide feet, flat arches, and a bunion that can make certain shoes painful or completely unwearable. I need shoes that are supportive, roomy, and ideally include built-in arch support- which already narrows down my options.

It used to frustrate me, especially when I saw beautiful shoes that didn’t fit or flatter. But eventually, I realised: this is an area worth investing in. When something is a daily struggle, it deserves attention, budget, and a plan.

If You Struggle With a Particular Area- Prioritise It

Whether it’s your feet, your bust, your waist, or finding trousers that actually fit properly, I always say: that’s where your energy and investment should go.

If you’re constantly fighting with your shoes, plan outfits around them. If trousers never quite feel right, find one or two pairs that really work and build your wardrobe from there.

The goal isn’t to have everything perfect- it’s to make getting dressed easier and more enjoyable, starting with the bits that usually trip you up.

Building Stylish Outfits That Work

Starting with footwear doesn’t mean compromising on style. In fact, I find it helps me stay more intentional. Once I know which shoes I’ll be wearing- my Adidas trainers, a lace up ankle boot- I can build up the rest of the outfit to create a cohesive look.

It’s not just about what looks good- it’s about what works for your life, your body, and your day.

If you’re finding style a struggle, try flipping things around. Start with the practical piece- whether it’s your shoes, your coat, or the trousers that actually fit- and build the outfit up from there.

It’s not always what the style books say, but it’s what real life often requires.
