11 Years as a Personal Stylist: How It Started and Why I Still Love My Work
This summer marks 11 years since I started my business- and if I’m honest, it still surprises me sometimes that this is where I ended up.
It began, as many career shifts do, out of necessity. I was on maternity leave from my role as a matrimonial solicitor, and the thought of returning to long hours and inflexible schedules with no family nearby to help with childcare just didn’t feel workable. At the time, all our parents were working full-time, and the logistics felt impossible.
So I made a decision to look for something different- something that could give me the flexibility I needed while still giving me a sense of purpose and creativity.
From Legal Life to Style and Simplicity
Style had always intrigued me- not necessarily fashion, but the way some people just seemed to pull an outfit together effortlessly. I loved understanding how clothes worked on different bodies, how colours changed the feel of an outfit, and how a well-organised wardrobe could make mornings feel smoother. I was also the person who enjoyed decluttering and finding ways to make things more practical and beautiful.
Retraining as a personal stylist made sense. It brought together my interest in style, my love for helping people feel more confident, and my desire to work in a way that could flex around family life.
A Business That Grows With My Family
From day one, my business has been shaped to fit around my children. It’s grown slowly and steadily- from nap-time admin and evening client calls to now having more consistent working hours as they’ve got older. And I wouldn't have it any other way.
As they’ve grown, so has my understanding of what clients need. I’ve learned that style isn’t just about trends or rules- it’s deeply personal. Many of the women I work with have spent years putting everyone else first. They’ve lost touch with what they like, what suits them, or how they want to show up in the world.
Helping them reconnect with themselves through their clothes is a privilege I never take for granted.
It’s Never Just About the Clothes
Yes, I love helping people find their best colours or build a wardrobe that actually works. But it’s not really about the clothes- it’s about what they unlock. When someone feels like themselves again, when they step out of the changing room taller, or send a message saying “I feel like me again”- that’s the bit that matters most.
Style can be a quiet kind of transformation. It’s not always loud or dramatic. It’s often found in the everyday moments- feeling good in what you’re wearing for the school run, or rediscovering a spark of joy when you open your wardrobe.
Thankyou
So if you’ve ever worked with me, recommended me, read a blog, booked a call, or just cheered me on- thank you. You’ve helped me build a business that still feels meaningful after 11 years.
