How to Build Themed Event Outfits Without Buying a Whole New Wardrobe

Sometimes the idea of a themed work event can feel intimidating. You want to look the part, but you don’t want to spend a fortune or feel like you’re in a costume. Recently, I helped a client navigate just this challenge- and the result was stylish, wearable, and stress-free.

The Brief:

Two themed nights: Tropical Vibes and Evening Chic. Minimal budget, preference to reuse what was already in his wardrobe.

The Challenge:

  1. His footwear options were either shoes for the office or casual trainers.

  2. He wasn’t keen on loafers or a no-socks look.

  3. He had some smart casual gaps in his wardrobe- pieces that could be updated but weren’t quite there yet.

  4. He didn’t want to buy much, meaning every addition had to be versatile for everyday wear.

The Approach:

Rather than just picking “fun” pieces, I looked at what he already had and considered how to make it feel intentional:

  • Theme translation: For Tropical Vibes, we focused on a shirt with a relaxed, playful print. A Hawaiian-style shirt worked perfectly. For Evening Chic, a tailored linen blazer and linen shirt brought refinement.

  • Proportion and comfort: We experimented with tucking shirts in or leaving them out. Leaving them out gave a more relaxed feel, perfect for the tropical night.

  • Footwear update: Heavy office shoes were replaced with Derby shoes to balance comfort, style, and casualise the look.

  • Smart additions: A navy linen shirt, combined with existing white jeans, gave a fresh, versatile base. A pocket handkerchief added a touch of polish to the linen blazer, making it feel intentional and styled.

The Outcome:

We created outfit boards to show how pieces could be combined for the events, and importantly, how they could be reused in everyday life. Not only did he have fun at the event, but his wardrobe gaps were subtly filled with versatile, smart casual staples he could continue to wear.

"Didn't feel out of place at either event, thank you."

Navigating Occasionwear with Confidence

  1. Themed doesn’t have to mean costume. With a little thought, your existing wardrobe can carry you through most events.

  2. Small updates make a difference. Switching shoes, adjusting shirt proportions, or adding a pocket square can completely change a look.

  3. Think in outfits, not individual pieces. One shirt or blazer can form the base of multiple ensembles, stretching your wardrobe far beyond the event.

If you’re heading to a themed event soon, try approaching it like a mini wardrobe challenge- look at what you have, fill in only the gaps, and focus on creating outfits that feel both fun and wearable. If you need help, take a look below.
