Why Embracing Your Personal Style is so Important

When I first embarked on my career as a Personal Stylist back in 2014, my primary focus was ensuring an accurate Colour and Body Shape Analysis. I was determined to tick all the right boxes and provide clients with an accurate analysis. However, I soon realised that conforming to predetermined boxes didn't necessarily make shopping easier or instill true confidence in their clothing choices. The real breakthrough occurred when we delved into their personal style, uncovering their unique clothing preferences and developing their style aesthetic.

While colour and shape analysis are important tools that contribute to the overall process, it is essential to understand that personal style should always take priority. It's not something that can be dictated or prescribed to someone. Frequently, when people discover my profession, they immediately ask, "What would you recommend for me?" Without is sounding like a put-off, the right answer isn't as simple as pulling a garment off the rail. It's more akin to a chef being asked to cook a dish without knowing the individual's preferred flavors and tastes. It’s the same when my Jigsaw colleagues and I are choosing new uniforms for the season ahead, we all choose from the same brand and collection of clothing, but the way we select and combine those pieces is what makes our personal style truly unique.

How do I discover my personal style?

Personal style is about self-expression, creativity, and authenticity. It's the embodiment of who we are and how we want to be perceived by the world. It goes beyond following trends or adhering to rigid guidelines. When we embrace personal style, we empower ourselves to curate a wardrobe that reflects our individuality and boosts our confidence.

One of the main advantages of focusing on personal style is that it transcends societal norms and expectations. It allows us to break free from the constraints of predefined categories and explore fashion without limitations. By understanding our clothing preferences and style aesthetics, we can build a wardrobe that speaks to us on a deeper level. Each garment becomes a reflection of our personality, values, and aspirations.

Furthermore, personal style liberates us from the pressure of conforming to arbitrary beauty standards. It celebrates diversity and encourages inclusivity. When we embrace our uniqueness, we pave the way for others to do the same, fostering a culture of self-acceptance and body positivity.

In the world of fashion, personal style is the ultimate form of self-expression. It is a powerful tool that allows us to communicate our individuality without uttering a single word. By prioritizing personal style over colour and body shape analysis, we can help individuals create a wardrobe that not only fits well but also speaks volumes about who you are.

Know Yourself

Wearing clothes that align with your personal style not only makes you feel more confident in what you are wearing, but can help you cut the overwhelm when you shop by having a clear idea about what you are looking for. Although our style tends to change and evolve as we move through life, with changes in our lifestyles, there are two easy tools that will guide you throughout, ensuring that pieces feel like you. These are your colour palette and your style aesthetic. When developing a client’s colour palette not only do I look for those colours that suit them , but those colours that they are naturally drawn to and enjoy wearing. It may be that they look great in bright, bold colours, but they make simply not feel comfortable wearing them and instead enjoy wearing the more muted shades of that palette. Creating an aesthetic that you truly love and feel you in is more than just fitting into boxes based on your appearance. How do I create a cohesive wardrobe that reflects my personal style?

To inject your personal style into any outfit, it's crucial to have a versatile wardrobe that reflects your fashion preferences. Invest in staple pieces that align with your style, whether this be a classic combination of white shirts and blazers or a more urban mix of a non-conformist mix of band t-shirts, moto jackets and trainers. These foundational items can be easily mixed and matched with trendier pieces, allowing you to create a wide range of outfits that stay true to your personal aesthetic.

Embrace Signature Pieces

Signature pieces are timeless elements that define your personal style. It could be a bold red lipstick like Gwen Stafani, wearing dresses like Holly Willoughby, or incorporating vintage pieces like Fearne Cotton. These pieces become part of your fashion identity and can be incorporated into multiple outfits. Embrace and showcase these signature items to make a distinctive statement wherever you go. Statement pieces are a great way to add a personal touch to any outfit. They are pieces of clothing that stand out and draw attention. Wearing a statement piece can make you feel confident and help you stand out in a crowd.

Tailoring and Fit

One of the most overlooked aspects of injecting personal style into an outfit is ensuring proper tailoring and fit. No matter how stylish or expensive a garment is, if it doesn't fit well, it won't do justice to your personal style. Invest in alterations when necessary to ensure that your clothes flatter your body shape and accentuate your best features. Incorporate your favourite colours

Color is a powerful tool in fashion. It can evoke emotions and create a mood. Incorporating your favorite colours into your outfits is a great way to inject your personal style. If you love the colour blue, try wearing a blue blazer or a blue scarf. For me incorporating my favourite shade of deep fuchsia in my outfit or wearing it as a nail varnish makes me feel happy and confident.

How can I incorporate current fashion trends into my personal style?

Incorporating current fashion trends into your personal style can be a fun and creative way to stay up-to-date. Here are some tips to help you effectively incorporate current fashion trends into your wardrobe whilst still maintaining your own unique identity:

Choose trends that align with your personal style

Not every trend will suit your aesthetic, so be selective about the ones you choose to incorporate. Look for trends that complement your existing wardrobe and align with your personal preferences. This way, you'll maintain a cohesive and authentic style.

Mix and match

Incorporating current trends doesn't mean you have to abandon your existing wardrobe. Experiment with combining trendy pieces with your staple items. For example, pair a trendy blouse with your favourite jeans or style a statement coat over a classic dress. Mixing and matching will give your outfits a fresh and contemporary feel.

Adapt trends to your body type

Not all trends are universally flattering (hello low rise jeans and crop tops!), so it's important to adapt them to your body type. Find variations of a trend that work well with your figure and highlight your best features. This will ensure you feel confident and comfortable in your outfits.

Start small

If you're unsure about diving headfirst into a trend, start by incorporating small elements. For example, try adding accessories like statement jewelry, scarves, or belts that reflect current trends. This allows you to experiment without committing to a complete style overhaul.

What factors should I consider when finding my personal style?

The most crucial element in injecting your personal style into any outfit is confidence. Wear your clothes with pride and embrace your unique style choices. Confidence will radiate through your appearance and make a statement that is true to your personality. Remember that fashion is an expression of oneself, and by staying true to your personal style, you are showcasing your authenticity and individuality.

Don't forget about comfort

Comfort is key when it comes to fashion. If you are not comfortable in what you are wearing, it will show. Choose clothes that are comfortable and easy to wear. You don't have to sacrifice style for comfort. There are plenty of clothes that are both stylish and comfortable.

Experiment with Accessories

Accessories are a powerful tool for injecting your personal style into any outfit. From statement jewelry and scarves to hats and belts, these small additions can transform a basic look into a fashion statement. Consider experimenting with different accessories that reflect your personality and enhance your outfit. For example, a bohemian-inspired outfit can be elevated with layered necklaces and a wide-brimmed hat, while a sleek, modern ensemble can benefit from minimalist jewelry and a structured handbag.

Play with Colors and Patterns

Colours and patterns have the ability to convey various moods and styles. Experiment with different colour combinations and patterns that resonate with your personal style. If you prefer a vibrant and bold look, incorporate bright hues and lively prints into your outfits. On the other hand, if you lean towards a more minimalist and monochromatic style, opt for neutral tones and subtle patterns. The key is to find a balance that allows you to express your personal style while still feeling comfortable and confident.

What are some tips for maintaining and evolving my personal style over time?

Stay true to yourself. Your personal style should be a reflection of your authentic self. Don't get swayed by fleeting trends or external pressures. Focus on what makes you feel comfortable, confident, and genuine. I refer back to my style Pinterest board to keep me on track with my style if I am feeling lost with my style.

Keep evolving

Personal style is not stagnant; it evolves as you grow and experience new things. Continuously explore and refine your style by integrating new influences and adapting to changing trends. Embrace evolution and allow yourself the freedom to try new things.

Experiment and explore

Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try new things. Experiment with different styles, silhouettes, colors, and accessories. Visit vintage stores, explore different brands, and keep an open mind. This will help you discover what resonates with you and allows your style to evolve.

What truly resonates with you, what makes you feel confident, and what brings you joy?Remember that your style is unique and cannot be replicated. Embrace it, experiment with it, and let it empower you to stand out from the crowd.
